Evolution and growth of the internet
The history of computers dates back in the 1950’s when the electronic computers were developed. Vintage forms of communication like telegraph, letters, telephone and radio had various challenges. These made computer innovators to design a faster and a better form of communication. That was the main objective of the internet. Initially the internet was just for broadcasting, a platform for communication and interaction between various computers. Consistency and commitment to stay relevant in the business has made the internet grow to the current level. The internet has evolved in four broad perspectives. They include:
- Technological advancement.
- Organization and management.
- Social perspective.
- Commercial concept.
As computers evolved from desktop computers to laptop computers and currently tablets and smartphones; the internet was not left behind. The internet has made tremendous growth to catch up with the fast growing technology. Initially, networking of the computers used packet switching technology. The internet was shared through physical telephone lines which were further connected through the server for internet access to connected computers. In late 1960s, the technology was overtaken by events, and then ARPANET technology took center stage. Commitment to research and design to increase network coverage to various areas, made internet designers improve the technology for internet provision. The analog technology made the use of the satellite as a medium for internet connection integrated with the dial-up connection for LAN (Local Area Network) and WAN (Wide Area Network). Currently, the digital technology uses the fiber optic cable integrated with the cloud computing technology to offer internet access.
Organization and management
The internet sector has proved that research, development and commitment to design compensates. The internet operates in a complex infrastructure organized and integrated remotely to allow communication and interaction between computers. Initially, the internet could only be possible between computers in a shared network. Management of the internet has currently seen the innovation of various web browsers as a medium for internet connection.
The old communication methods were slow and cumbersome. The internet has made it simple and fast. Initially, the internet could only support emails, as technology improved the use of audios was integrated with the phone technology to communicate via the internet but through the phone. Software developers have designed Instant Messaging applications to allow real time interactions and video conferencing.
Business enterprises have embraced the internet as opposed to the old communication systems. The general Email was not sufficient. Improved internet connection has seen businesses customize emails to capture business names and employees’ names in an organized format. All sectors of the business have embraced the internet to run its day-to-day operations. Businesses have had to have a presence on the web as opposed to physical outreach and use of paper to market them. Currently, interactions between the business and customers have become interactive with the use of marketing automation and online forums to get feedback.The internet is a sector that has maintained and sustained its operations to enjoy its growth.
