Major League Baseball is a professional league that consists of 30 teams that are now testing a groundbreaking new system, the ABS, i.e., the Automated Ball Strike System. In this article, you will learn about ABS technology, how it works, and its impact on players and games. 

What Is The Automated Ball-Strike System (ABS)?

People who are interested in baseball know a rectangular box that appears in front of the batter is the strike zone. It may vary from batter to batter. The human umpires fall short of making perfect calls, and their strike zones look less like a rectangle and more like an oval. A 100-mile-per-hour fastball or a rapid curveball is not the simplest thing to look after precisely every time. Here comes the ABS technology, which helps to determine whether a pitch is a ball or a strike. 

The system was first tried at the Atlantic League in 2019. Then, in 2021, a challenge system was experimented at the Florida State League. Then, in 2023, it was expanded to all Triple-A stadiums after being promoted in 2022. The robot alone for the first three games, and a challenge system with a human in the final three games. 

How ABS Affects MLB Players & Teams

In baseball, players should carefully time their challenges as they are limited. Players should carefully challenge calls,i.e., like an important strikeout or play at the plate. Using challenges early in the game may risk crucial moments later because challenging a low-impact call won’t be worth it. Players must consider and calculate every count, inning, and game situation to use challenge properly at high-stake moments. Catchers, pitchers, and batters, i.e., the team, should work together to decide when to challenge. 

Will ABS Be Used In The Regular Season?

MLB is planning to launch ABS in the 2026 season to help umpires with more accurate calls, especially on close pitches on close pitches. The ABS system is to assist umpires and not replace them. It is to provide real-time data to umpires so that they can make more accurate decisions. For example, if ABS detects a ball within the strike zone, the umpire can overrule it based on the judgment.

Player Reactions To Robot Umpires & ABS Testing

Pitchers mostly challenge borderline calls, even when they know a call is overturned, only to control the game. For catchers, the launching of ABS has reduced the significance of pitch-framing, which shifts focus to receiving rather than glove adjustments. Even managers now carefully consider when to use challenges, adding extra pressure to their decision-making.

The ABS system helps reduce human error by increasing the accuracy of calls. Also, it limits disputes and helps in speeding up the match.
